Golf Swing Tip: Use a Smooth Transition for Solid Contact for Duffers

by Wayne Hudler

What if you had a smooth effortless swing? You would swing easier yet make better contact than ever before. As a result the ball will go farther than ever before with more control. You can learn the key move in the golf swing that makes all the difference to better ball striking. You shouldn't overlook this key ingredient to improving your golf swing and lowering your handicap.

If there is a single point in the golf swing that we need to get right it is the transition. Many of us get this wrong (I'm guilty). We think that we should hit the ball hard rather than swing the club fast. Swings are better than hits.

The transition occurs at the point when the back swing reaches it peak and the transfer of weight from the back leg to the forward leg begins. It is when the club changes direction. Both the shaft and your muscles will load up energy to be released in the downswing. Get this move wrong and you reduce your chance to make solid contact to less than 25%.

Many times we decide at this moment to "muscle up" and "hit" the ball hard. We then grip the club harder moving the club face off line. This also tends to create a violent move toward the ball that is out of tempo and forces the club off plane and hands to get ahead of the body. Getting the result you expected with all of that going wrong is about as likely as a 200 yard hole in one.

The transition is the key to power and speed in the golf swing. As your body reaches the finish of the back swing, it is fully coiled with maximum energy stored in the larger muscles of the legs and torso.

The club also builds and stores power as well. As it reaches the top of the backswing the weight of the club head causes the shaft to flex once your hands stop. Then as your hands move back down toward the ground and then the ball this stored power increases as your club head lags behind your hands utilizing the flexibility in the golf shaft.

At the moment of impact the stored energy in both the club and your body is unleashed to create club head speed which is the secret to controlled distance in the golf swing.

This is best accomplished with a smooth and relaxed swing rather than a stiff and violent attempt to hit the ball.

Dooley Duffer knows the difference a "smooth" transition makes. Once he learned to relax and swing the club in tempo his ball striking improved by leaps and bounds. He still fights the tendency to "muscle up". But when he gets the golf swing transition move right he hits the longest straightest tee balls and his iron shots are on target too. Here I'll list Dooley's tips to help you with your transition.

  1. Relax at address
  2. Take it back low and slow
  3. Stay relaxed at the top
  4. Think "swing" not "hit"

Remember the goal here is to use a smooth transition move. Nothing quick, fast and hard but slow, smooth and in rhythm will do the job.
