I am a golf gadget guy anyway and love new technology, so I have owned one of these for about three years now. At first my playing partners would tease me about it, but it wasn't too many rounds until they started using it too when we road on the same cart. 1. They Speed Up Play.

One of the most concerning things about the game of golf is the time required to play, usually a little more than four hours. But rounds lasting nearly five hours are not unheard of. Worse yet the trend for the length of the average round is increasing.

Enter the golf GPS units. They hold the chance of reducing the time to play an average round by thirty minutes or more. You see one of the time consuming parts of the game is that each player needs to know the distance to his target in order to select the proper club.

In the past he would seek out yardage markers on the course and then pace off the distance from the marker to the ball. But with the GPS device the golfer pulls up to his ball, checks the distance indicated by the GPS device and immediately knows the distance to the target and club to choose.

If it takes two minutes to determine the distance using the old method, we just saved that two minutes with the GPS system. Now multiply that by all four players in a group and you can get an idea of how much time could be saved with this new technology.

We all work at keeping our scores as low as possible. Yet we are prone to make errors in judgment while on the course. Initially these units were very pricey. The first company I remember offering these sold a lesser unit for around $300 USD plus an annual fee and another fee to download courses in another state. They sold many of them (I bought one) and then they were approved for tournament play by both the USGA and the R&A.

With this level of acceptance many new brands have entered the marketplace. They offer a variety of features and programs to suit the needs of nearly every golfer. The beauty of this competition is that prices have come down and now I am seeing some units available for about $150 USD.

So there you have it. Faster play and lower scores all for an affordable price. You could lower your handicap and have more fun doing it. Now that sounds like a winner to me.
