Do you have a plan when you practice putting or do you just drop a few balls on the putting green and attempt a few putts in a hap hazard fashion?
It is always best to have a plan when you are about to practice putting. Your practice time will be more productive if you have a plan and stick to it. It has often been said that putting is the most important part of your golf game. Truer words have never been spoken. PGA Tour pros know that and spend much more time working on their putting than any other skill. They have a plan. Dave Pelz has made a name for himself and a teaching empire by focusing on putting instruction. He recommends using a plan. Have I made my point? You too need a putting practice plan. That way you will practice properly. Another old saying is that practice makes perfect. Only perfect practice makes perfect. So you need a perfect putting practice plan. My golf mentor, Dooley Duffer, uses the following plan to help him improve his putting. He learned a lot about putting over the years from books, pros and lately from ebooks he found online. That is how he developed his plan. It should help you too
. Start with posture. How you stand over the ball is vital to executing a successful stroke. A proper stance is one where you are balanced, feet about shoulder width apart, your body is positioned square or parallel to the intended line of the putt. You should bend forward from the hips so that your eyes are over or just inside the ball. Exhale slowly and consciously relax. Practice getting into this posture beginning from behind the ball, walk up to the ball, get into the stance, relax and then repeat. Do not attempt to putt. Do this five times. .Master your grip. The grip can be a very individual thing. You need to know yours like the back of your hand.
The grip is the key to a consistent, repeatable putting stroke so you will need to develop a grip that is simple, comfortable and feels natural. A word about grip pressure, this is absolutely the hardest part to write about. Let me just say the grip should be just strong enough to control the putter head but not so strong that the muscles in your hands, forearms and shoulders become tense. Practice gripping the putter by gripping then releasing the putter with both hands and the re-gripping. Do this 5 times. Dooley's putting recommendations |

.Stroke the putt. The movement of the putter back and through the shot is most easily controlled by the larger muscles of the shoulders rather than a hand and wrist motion.
The recommended stroke is to move the back should up, this moves the putter away from the ball, then the shoulder moves back down carrying the putter back to the back of the ball and through the ball along the path of the intended target line. Practice making this move 5 times. .Make the putts. At this point you are ready to begin practicing putting. I written a different article called "Putting Drills: Try This Pre-Round Putting Warm Up Routine for Duffers" to give you a solid plan for practicing putting. Dooley's putting recommendations |

| Remember to putt perfectly you must practice perfectly. Use these putting tips to help you take the old saying "practice makes perfect" to the next level. Now you know that perfect practice is what is makes perfect. |
