Golf Fitness: What Does a Golf Fitness Program Involve for Duffers?
 by Wayne Hudler

It's the 12th hole, a par 5 with a lake short of the green. Your tee ball was good but you still have 195 yards to carry the lake. Do you lay up or go for it? If you are tired, feeling a little sore this late in the round than you had better lay up. No chance for eagle today. But if you are fit for golf with the strength and stamina for all 18 holes then you reach for the 3 hybrid and go for it. Now you're putting for eagle. The difference is that golf work program you have been thinking about. But you want to know what you are getting into before you commit. Discover just what those programs are all about today.

Golf is a physically demanding sport. While not as physical as other sports like football, basketball or baseball, golf indeed requires a coordinated series of body movements designed to create a perfect strike on a golf ball at the fastest possible speed. That is the goal of every golf swing and is undeniably physically demanding.

Think about how many full swings you execute during a normal round and the pre-round warm up? If the average golfer (average score 99) has 38 putts per round, then that leaves 61 full swings that counted (excludes on-course practice swings).

If they use just one practice swing for each shot that doubles the number to 122. The average bucket at the driving range has about 50 golf balls. If they did the recommended pre-round warm up that brings our total full swings to about 182. All within about a 4 to 5 hour time span!

If you want to add those extra yards on a permanent basis without tricks, gimmicks and the like then I beg you to consider improving the one key element of your golf game you probably haven't thought about until now. That key element is your body.

Think about it, your body determines swing speed, swing path and club face angle at impact. Your golf swing is intended to return the clubface into the ball square to the target line at the fastest possible speed. No matter how great that new driver is or how perfectly matched that ball is to your swing and equipment it matters not if your body fails to accomplish its part in the process.

So if your body is more important to a successful swing than the equipment involved shouldn't we consider improving the body's ability to perform the golf swing? Makes sense doesn't it?

Challenge Yourself. Get Fit Today.

I would encourage you to begin a golf specific fitness program today. We've already determined that you need to be in good shape to execute a successful golf swing consistently.

The golf swing requires the body to have dynamic balance and strength as well as flexibility. Your golf fitness program should amount to a set of stretches and exercises designed to unleash the swing's stored energy at the moment of impact. Your program should be just that focused.

The beauty of a golf specific fitness system is that it only requires thirty minutes daily at home or the office (I do mine at work most days) with very basic training tools. You can do that, can't you?

Nothing too strenuous but if done consistently over time (a few weeks) will begin to make a noticeable difference you can feel and see on the course. That sense of strength and power is unmistakable as you stand over each shot. You have new found confidence knowing that you are more physically able to swing the golf club successfully.

That is all you need. It is not rocket science. But let's take this discussion one step further and talk about what you will be doing and why.

The goal here in part is to increase strength not in body builder fashion so no heavy weights are involved. Strength training for the golf swing is unlike any other strength training and is totally unrelated to traditional fitness programs. Hence the term "golf specific".

You will work on rotational strength and flexibility. You already know that the golf swing is made around the body. The emphasis in your workout will be to increase torque for greater force along with perfect timing in applying that greater force to the ball for longer straighter shots from every club.

The training will usually involve core rotational movements using some type of resistance such as exercise tubing or bands. The routines will include movements while standing, setting on a stability ball, on one leg as well as simulating your address position.

After a few weeks using a golf fitness workout program you will begin to notice improved stamina over the entire 182 full swings around all 18 holes. Improved swing consistency meaning fewer surprises about where the ball finishes. You will see more distance with each club. A body fit for golf will have improved stamina and a better mental game too.

There you have it. Golf specific workout programs are short 30 minutes sessions designed to improve core strength and rotational ability. Flexibility and timing are an emphasis as well. You just need a few pieces of exercise equipment and a program worthy of your time and effort. Not as difficult as you first thought, huh? You can do this. Why not now?
