There you are in the middle of the fairway preparing for a simple approach shot. You've nailed that drive and now a birdie putt is just a swing away. This is the money shot and it feels so doable. Golf is easy from the fairway.
You make the swing but instead of the towering approach shot you envisioned the ball ends up bounding along the ground hopping and jumping its way until it comes to rest only a few dozen yards ahead. What a disappointment. Now you're frustrated and embarrassed. Not to mention there is now no shot at that birdie putt. You've topped the ball. Again. So why do you top the ball like this? The answer to that question will depend on why your head is moving up during the shot. You could be lifting your head due to a balance problem or you could be overly anxious to watch the ball flight. continued below... |

Let's talk about the first reason today. The other is covered in a prior article called Look Up to See a Bad Shot for Duffers. For those with a balance issue it is likely caused by either poor posture at address or a too violent backswing. As you move the club back to the top this can alter your center of balance if you take it too far back or take it back too violently. The body has an automatic stabilizing process that will compensate for the shift in center of balance and move your body involuntarily. In this particular case the motion of the back swing and the weight of the club pulling up and back you most likely will raise your head. When the downswing begins you just don't have the time to re-adjust. Hence the club head is now moved away from the ball an equal distance as your head, resulting in a topped shot. |
Take a lifetime of full swing lessons for less than the cost of one 30 minute session with a pro. |

To correct this swing fault, you need to establish the correct posture at address.
Try using multiple fast practice swings. Stand in your normal address position away from the ball. Swing the club back and forth very rapidly without stopping. Do this continuously, over and over again and just to work on keeping your balance.
Take careful notice of how your swing moves around your spine driven by your free swinging arms and how your body will naturally find the correct bend from the hips.
Then step up to the ball using that swing posture and swing the same from address as you did while you were practicing.
You will be shocked at how crisply you will begin striking the ball. No more lifting up!! |
|
| Make this practice swing technique a part of your regular routine and you will see greatly improved ball striking and a lot less frustration and embarrassment. |
