Golf Swing Tip: Five Tips to Conquering the Driver Swing for Duffers

by Wayne Hudler

You are standing on the first tee preparing to hit your first drive of the day. Do you know where it is going?  Are you calm and confident or do you worry about where you might end up, the trees on left or the ninth fairway on the right? Discover these five important tips to gaining confidence with your driver swing.

I love golf. You probably already knew that. One of the best moments on the golf course is watching a well struck tee shot. The beauty of the ball flight can only be described as majestic.

It gives me an incredible sense of accomplishment and confidence knowing that I have a great start to a good score on that hole.

Golfers spend enormous amounts annually on new drivers, golf lessons, swing training aides and the like all in an effort to master the driver swing.

Considering that the driver is the longest club in the bag and therefore one of the hardest to hit properly that well struck tee ball can be harder to come by than a winning lottery ticket.

It is no wonder that we spend so much time and money on that one club and those 14 tee balls. A well placed tee shot sets us up for a short iron approach from the fairway.

Golf is so much easier from the fairway, don't you think?

Here are five tips to help you with undoubtedly the single most difficult swing in all of golf: the driver.

1. Set up properly. Your front shoulder should be higher than your back shoulder with the ball placed off the toes of the forward foot. Elbows should be pointed more toward your hips. This position will help you launch it long and straight.

2. Relax. Muscle tension is a nemesis for all golfers on all shots.  It causes you to grip the club too tightly. Moving the club face open or closed and reducing club head speed. If you are tense then you will most likely "hit the ball" instead of "swing the club". Swings are better than hits.

3. Slow and low takeaway. I heard John Daly mention this once as what he focuses on when hitting the driver. Move the club slowly along the first 6 inches of the backswing keeping it low to the ground. Do this by moving your shoulders in unison rather than by lifting with the hands.

4. Stay balanced. The longer driver swing can easily pull you off balance making it nearly impossible to return the club properly to impact. Control is more important than speed and speed is more important than strength.

5. Smooth transition.  This is the longest club in the bag and the easiest to miss hit. So often those mis-hits are the result of a violent transition. As the player reaches the top of the backswing he rushes into the downswing with a strong and forceful move. The result is a loss of control of the club head and likely wayward tee shot. Instead focus on making a smooth transition with a bit of a pause once you reach the top.

These 5 tips will help you to conquer the driver swing and develop a more confident and successful tee shot every time.

Then you will know as you stand on the tee box with driver in hand just where the shot is going. You'll know that with the ball in the fairway you will have an easier approach shot to the green.
